About Judith

Judith Farris Bowman

Judith-Headshot-DSC_0756.jpg

Judith Farris Bowman is a divorce attorney and mediator who also serves families as a guardian ad litem and parenting coordinator. For over 25 years she has represented clients in negotiation and litigation of family dissolution matters and has facilitated many dissolution agreements as a mediator. She is also trained as a guardian ad litem and parenting coordinator and has qualified for the Probate and Family Court lists of those eligible for court appointment in those roles.

Judith is dedicated to achieving workable solutions to the issues that arise for every family going through the financial and emotional stress of a family break-up. She believes that common sense and compassion can resolve most struggles around sharing responsibility for children after divorce, if parents are given enough information about the effects of divorce on children at different developmental stages and shown the many options available for parenting plans. Such information helps parents keep the best interests of the child at the forefront of planning and allows both parents to be engaged and involved in the child’s life.

Judith graduated from Radcliffe (Harvard) College in 1961 and received her law degree from Columbia Law School in 1974. After three years in the Criminal Appeals Bureau of The Legal Aid Society of New York, she returned to Boston in 1977 and continued appellate work with a Massachusetts criminal law firm. However, since 1985, litigation on behalf of individuals involved in family law matters and mediation with divorcing or separating families has been the primary focus of her work.  She now limits her practice to mediation, parenting coordination, and guardian-ad-litem investigations for the court.

Judith has been admitted to the bar in New York and Massachusetts and to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States.

She is a member of the Boston Bar Association, where she previously served on the Family Law Steering Committee, and of the Massachusetts Bar Association, where she served on the ADR Subcommittee of the Family Law Section. She has also been a member of the Family Law Section of the American Bar Association and currently belongs to the Massachusetts Council on Family Mediation and the Massachusetts Association of Guardians ad Litem, where she is a member of the Board of Directors.
